HIST 2120 - Introduction to the History of Love, Sex, and Marriage in the Western World

This course will introduce the student to the historical development of the various concepts of love, sex, and marriage in the Western world.  These topics are especially interesting, because while many often see them as historical constraints - people have always fallen in love, people have always had sex, and some people have always married - the ideas about, and the purposes of love, sex, and marriage have varied greatly over time and place.  Students thus have to confront, explore, and put into historical perspective their perceived ideas about these basic human issues and behaviors.  In addition, students will also learn about the historical concepts of gender, of what has been considered masculine and feminine behavior and appearance over time in the western world.
