SOCI 4010 - Seminar on Nonprofit Organizations and the Community


The nonprofit sector is the third sector in American society behind the business sector and the government sector.  It comprises 8.8 percent of GNP and employs 11 percent of the workforce.  There are over 1.6 million nonprofits in the United States with other $3.8 trillion in assets.  In 2010 there were 37,882 nonprofits in Georgia with assets totaling $96 billion.  This course is organized as a seminar which is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the origins, nature legal status, mission, functions, funding leadership, management and operations of nonprofit organizations and their impact on and relations with the communities they serve.  Participants will gain insights into the donors, members, employees, board members, beneficiaries, volunteer management and fund raising of these organizations.  The seminar will serve the needs of student who are working, volunteering or training with nonprofit organization nor or in the future.  Through readings, case studies, discussions, lectures, group projects, service learning attachments and presentations from nonprofit managers, students will develop practical and theoretical understanding of nonprofits and their role in the community.  Guest speakers will include the managers from a cross section of national and community nonprofit agencies such as United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Rec Cross, Friends of Recovery, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, Georgia Mountain Food Bank, Women’s Source, Gateway Domestic Violence Center, Humane Society, Disabled Veterans Transportation network, Good News Clinics, Legacy Link, Alliance for Literacy and NAMI.
