The Department of English offers programs leading to the Associate of Arts degree and the Bachelor of Arts degree. Each of these programs develops communication and critical thinking skills, which are highly valued in graduate schools, professional programs, and businesses in a variety of settings.

Students may study for the A.A. in English or English Education, or they may study for the B.A. in English with a concentration in Literature, Writing & Publication, or Teacher Certification. The Literature option provides students with the broadest possible perspective of diverse literary traditions. The Writing & Publication concentration balances literary study with the theory and practice of writing and publishing. The Teacher Certification option includes courses in Teacher Education and field experience, leading to certification to teach grades 6-12.

The Department offers minors in English and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

The Department sponsors a study abroad program through ENGL 4437, Exploring the Literary World, offered during the summer term. Additionally, students may take advantage of other study abroad opportunities through the Center for Global Engagement and the University System of Georgia.
The mission of the Department is enhanced by the Writing Program, which includes the first-year writing sequence, the Writing & Publication concentration, and the Writing Center.
The faculty of the Department of English assist students in planning their academic program of study and in choosing courses which comply with degree requirements for the selected major.
Students are responsible for completing the baccalaureate plan of study during their junior year.
