History, Anthropology, & Philosophy

The Department of History, Anthropology, & Philosophy offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in History. In conjunction with the College of Education, the Department of History, Anthropology, & Philosophy offers courses leading to teacher licensure at the secondary level in History. The College of Education is responsible for admission and regulation of the Teacher Education Program.

The Department’s academic programs prepare students for graduate study and employment in a range of fields. Its educational programs are structured to address community and professional needs.

Graduating majors are required to demonstrate their skills in oral and written communication, analytical precision, and competency in their field. In addition, graduating majors are expected to exhibit the ability to apply the knowledge and skills of their field to everyday situations.

The History, Anthropology, & Philosophy Department issues credit for advanced placement in World Civilization, U.S. History and Western Civilization. The minimum scores necessary for AP Credit are as follows:

5 HIST 2200 and HIST 2201
U.S. History 3, 4 HIST 2111
5 HIST 2111 and HIST 2112
World History 3, 4 HIST 1112
5 HIST 1111 and HIST 1112

The Department also accepts credit for the U.S. History CLEP (College Level Examination Program) exam.

It is recommended that students take appropriate lower level history courses, including HIST 2000, before taking any upper 3000-4000 level courses.

A grade of “C” or higher is required in all courses required for the major.
