Location is a fundamental attribute of all features. Professionals in a wide range of disciplines are utilizing Geographic Information Systems to collect, manage, and analyze geographic information for a deeper understanding of our world. In many disciplines, applied knowledge of geospatial technology has become a presumed pre-requisite.

The University of North Georgia Certificate in Geographic Information Science is an applied program that combines theory and training to address real-world problems in a variety of disciplines. Course material is tied closely to the geospatial industry. Participating students will gain valuable experience through internships, service projects, and research projects.

The Certificate is designed to complement students who are pursuing or who already possess an Associates Degree or higher. Students will be prepared for entry level positions as GIS technicians and/or transfer into competitive four-year degree programs. Courses in the Geographic Information Science Certificate may be applied toward the Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Environmental Spatial Analysis.

To earn a GIS Certificate, students must:

  1. Maintain a 2.5 GPA in all required GIS Certificate courses.
  2. Complete all 4000-level courses at UNG. Note: Transfer credit for 4000-level GISC courses may be considered according to the Geospatial Technology Center transfer agreement. Check with your academic advisor.
  3. Apply for graduation one semester prior to completion of the Certificate requirements.
