Applied Environmental Spatial Analysis (AESA) Environmental Science Track (B.S.)

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Environmental Spatial Analysis is a blend of both education and training designed to produce graduates with skills that meet the needs of employers in the Geospatial Technology field with little or no further training by employers. The Applied Environmental Spatial Analysis (AESA) degree is composed of a focused curriculum built on a firm foundation in science. The educational base for this degree is made up of four components seamlessly integrated with a core of GIS.  The components of Geographic Information Science, Remote Sensing (RS), and Information Technology (IT) combine to make up the field of Geospatial Technology. The fourth component is environmental science with a focus on water resources.


Entrance Requirements

  1. Complete all GSC general institutional admissions requirements.
  2. Declare a major in Applied Environmental Spatial Analysis.

Program Completion Requirements


  1. Successful completion of all courses required in the degree program (minimum 120 semester credits), including the lower division associate degree requirements.
  2. Successful completion of a minimum of 42 general education credits according to the distribution established by the college (Areas A-E) for its Associate of Science degree program.
  3. Successful completion of at least 39 credits of upper division coursework in the major (3000 and 4000 level courses with the GISC and ESCI prefix).
  4. Grades of C or higher required for all major courses (GISC & ESCI).
  5. Cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) required for graduation.
  6. Complete a minimum of 30 credit hours at GSC which must include all GISC courses.
  7. Successful completion of the Regents’ Test.
  8. For students with previous GIS course work, credit for GISC courses will be determined by placement testing.
  9. Meet all other college graduation policies.
  10. Students that have accumulated 60 hours or more of course credit must complete all required 1000/2000 level science and mathematics courses prior to declaring the Applied Environmental Spatial Analysis degree.
  11. Students that have previously completed a bachelor’s degree or higher should meet with the Director of the Institute of Environmental Spatial Analysis (IESA) to discuss the academic requirements for completing the AESA degree program.  Students with a B.S. degree or higher may apply courses that are taken at another institution but not offered by GSC.  Some of these courses may be substituted for courses in one of the tracks.  These course substitutions must be approved by the IESA governing board.  These substitute courses will be designated special topics courses on the GSC transcript.  A maximum of 9 hours of course credit will be awarded in this fashion.
  12. Students may be able to design a customized track to meet special educational goals.  The title of this track will be the “Interdisciplinary Track”.  These customized tracks will be developed with an advisor and approved by the governing board of the IESA.  All GISC and required science and math courses must still be completed.
