  • MUAP 4560 - Applied Secondary String


    A continuation of MUAP 2560 focusing on advanced string techniques with a greater emphasis on the study of standard repertoire. Admission to upper-division instruction is contingent upon both the completion of a minimum of two semesters in MUAP 2560 and satisfactory completion of a divisional barrier jury before a panel of music faculty. Students will receive 25 minutes of instruction per credit hour. To be eligible for two credit lessons, students must have declared a Music Major or Music Minor. A student may accumulate a maximum of 16 credit hours in this course.

    Prerequisites: Completion of two semesters of MUAP 2520 with grades of C or higher and audition. For students to be eligible for 2 credit hours, must be declared Music major or minor and Department Head permission.

  • MUED 3210 - General Music Methods and Literature


    Current music education philosophy and curriculum planning and assessment will be addressed using materials and methods appropriate for young children. Principle education methods, such as Kodaly, Orff, and Dalcroze will be examined and related to general childhood curriculum. Class instruction will also include components of multiculturalism and technology in education. Field experiences (30 hours) will allow for practical training in classroom management. Field experiences will be integrated with academic instruction.

  • MUED 3220 - Music for Special Learners


    This course examines the legislative, psychological, sociological and philosophical foundations of music education for special learners. Content will include an introduction to special education laws and terms, a basic overview of specific disabilities, and an explanation of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and how music educators can be a part of that process. Examples and strategies will shed light on how to collaborate with special education teachers and paraprofessionals, classroom and behavior management for the inclusive classroom, and most importantly, practical examples of how to accommodate and modify music instruction for students with disabilities in the inclusive classroom. Active discussion, music making, lesson building, and skills and approaches to teaching will be included in class meetings.

    Students in this course will develop a knowledge of skills necessary to design and implement a choral program in an academic instructional context. Primary instruction will focus on topics which relate specifically to choral music programs in an academic instructional context, and their interrelationship to overall middle and secondary school curricula. Class instruction will include instruction regarding the practical abilities of performers at differing levels of development, in addition to instruction in developing literacy and harmony skills in young vocal musicians. Field experiences will be integrated with the academic instruction.

  • MUED 4225 - Marching Band Methods


    This course will discuss the organization, techniques, administration, and materials associated with high school marching band as part of the total instrumental music program. The course will introduce and supplement knowledge of the fundamental principles necessary for effective instruction with respect to the contemporary marching band and provide opportunities for students to apply the skills necessary to prepare, organize, teach, and rehearse this type of ensemble. In addition, the course will examine the expectations, aspirations, and biases regarding the role of the marching band in music education. Students will leave the course with a command of the terminology, pedagogy, and structure necessary to successfully run a marching program. There is no field placement associated with this course.

    Students in this course will develop a knowledge of skills necessary to design and implement a keyboard music program in an academic instructional context. Primary instruction will focus on topics which relate specifically to keyboard music, such as ‘selecting piano literature for students of various types and abilities’. Students will also learn practical abilities of performers at different levels of development. Class assignments will include evaluation of differing methods of instruction. Academic instruction will also include components in multiculturalism and technology in education. Field experiences and observation will be integrated with the academic instruction.

  • MUED 4280 - Curriculum and Assessment


    This course will address curricular issues and assessment strategies in music education. Music curriculum models will be examined in detail. Students will construct a semester-long curriculum derived from selected repertoire that references state and national standards, to include an assessment plan that incorporates diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments. Additionally, students will complete field experience and assessments as required by the College of Education.

  • MUED 4290 - Seminar in Music Education


    This course is a synthesis culmination course for the music education degree which explores the philosophies, teaching methods, materials, and curriculum for a comprehensive music program. Focus will be on the design and implementation of the above elements at the secondary level (instrumental and vocal performance models, music theory, aural skills, music history) and the primary level (general elementary music). In addition to exploring teaching strategies and curriculum development, students will study content-specific evaluation tools and methodologies. Students will also be given practical guidance in the administration of a comprehensive music program. Additionally, students will complete field experience and assessments as required by the College of Education.

    The development of basic music literacy in reading and writing music. Students will be required to write and perform simple musical exercises.     Undergraduate students seeking music degrees are required to complete the requisite semesters of concert attendance by attending a combination of a least ten (10) approved concerts, recitals, and master classes each semester. Successful completion of an additional four semesters of MUSC 1201 is required to graduate in the Bachelors program. This course is repeatable up to eight times.

  • MUSC 1820 - Marching Band


    Open to qualified students by audition. The Golden Eagle Marching Band is the oldest student organization on the North Georgia campus. Formed in 1873 as a part of the Corps of Cadets, the Golden Eagle Band has a long and rich heritage as the marching band at North Georgia.  Unlike most high school marching bands who perform for football halftimes and in adjudicated marching contests, the Golden Eagle Band’s primary duty is to develop and produce an indoor marching show with design elements similar to those of Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International. The band performs this program during its annual spring tour.

    Comprehensive keyboard musicianship course for advanced pianists emphasizing the development of sight reading, harmonization, transposition, improvisation, playing by ear, and vocal and instrumental score reading.   • MUSC 2820 - Marching Band


    Open to qualified students by audition. The Golden Eagle Marching Band is the oldest student organization on the North Georgia campus. Formed in 1873 as a part of the Corps of Cadets, the Golden Eagle Band has a long and rich heritage as the marching band at North Georgia.  Unlike most high school marching bands who perform for football halftimes and in adjudicated marching contests, the Golden Eagle Band’s primary duty is to develop and produce an indoor marching show with design elements similar to those of Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International. The band performs this program during its annual spring tour.
