  • MUAP 1670 - Major Applied Jazz & Commercial


    Performance-based instruction focusing on the development of artistic ability. Emphasis is given to the development of performance abilities in jazz and/or commercial music styles through the study of standard repertoire. A combination of individual (50-minute lesson) and group (studio/master class) instruction provides preparation for public performance. Each student who is enrolled for major applied instruction must concurrently participate fully in a major UNG performance ensemble, regardless of whether the student chooses to enroll for ensemble credit. A student may accumulate a maximum of 2 credit hours in this course.

  • MUAP 1680 - Major Applied Voice - Musical Theatre


    Performance-based instruction focusing on the development of artistic ability. Emphasis is given to the development of vocal performance abilities through the study of standard classical and musical theatre repertoire. A combination of individual (50-minute lesson) and group (studio/master class) instruction provides preparation for public performance. Each student who is enrolled for major applied vocal instruction in musical theatre must concurrently participate fully in either a major UNG vocal performance ensemble or as a member of the principal cast or chorus of a UNG/GTA musical theatre production regardless of whether the student chooses to enroll for ensemble or production for credit. A student may accumulate a maximum of 2 credit hours in this course.

    This introductory music education course will examine the “Big Four” pedagogical approaches to elementary general music curriculum, including Dalcroze, Kodaly, Orff, and Music Learning Theory, with a central focus on “Best” instructional practices. Students will develop a repertoire of age-appropriate songs, games, and activities aligned with the national and state standards for music content, grades K-5. Course topics will include multicultural approaches to music education and technology tools for music content. Students will hone skills in curriculum planning, instructional sequencing, and assessment in an experiential peer teaching lab. 20 hours of field observations are a requirement of this course.

  • MUED 3220 - Music for Special Learners


    This course examines the legislative, psychological, sociological, and philosophical foundations of music education for exceptional learners. Content includes special education law, terminology, an overview of disability domains, and the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. Topics include collaborative strategies with IEP team members, parents, teachers, and paraprofessionals; Classroom and behavior management; and accommodations of music instruction for students with disabilities in the inclusive music setting. Situational case studies will prompt in-class discussions, music-making, and approaches to differentiation, adaptive technology, and modifications of assessments. To satisfy the College of Education Special Education requirement, students must earn a grade of B or higher in MUED 3220.

    This course will discuss the organization, techniques, administration, and materials associated with high school marching band as part of the total instrumental music program. The course will introduce and supplement knowledge of the fundamental principles necessary for effective instruction with respect to the contemporary marching band and provide opportunities for students to apply the skills necessary to prepare, organize, teach, and rehearse this type of ensemble. In addition, the course will examine the expectations, aspirations, and biases regarding the role of the marching band in music education. Students will leave the course with a command of the terminology, pedagogy, and structure necessary to successfully run a marching program. There is no field placement associated with this course.

    Curriculum and Assessment is a synthesis capstone course for the music education degree with a central focus on the alignment of curriculum planning, instruction, and assessment to national and state standards for K-12 music content. Students will develop standards-based unit planning with grade-appropriate repertoire, differentiated instructional strategies, and formative and summative assessments. Students will examine alternative approaches to music education, including using technology tools for music content delivery and teaching diversity through the lens of multicultural music education.     Comprehensive keyboard musicianship course for advanced pianists emphasizing the development of sight reading, harmonization, transposition, improvisation, playing by ear, and vocal and instrumental score reading. Ensemble piano music is also performed. This course addresses components of the keyboard competency requirement for piano performance majors.

    Through an exploration of various genres, this course will acquaint pianists with the skills and demands required of a collaborative artist. Opera, song, and instrumental literature will be discussed, prepared, and performed as part of this course.

  • MUSC 2340 - Music Composition - Lower Division


    Performance-based instruction in the development of basic skills necessary for music composition. Instruction may be given in either a group or individual setting or a combination of the two, depending upon the starting level and academic needs of the student. The course is repeatable for up to 16 credit hours.

  • MUSC 2440 - History of Rock and Roll


    A musical survey of the history of rock and roll, the course begins with the origins of the genre, tracing its development, and exploring its derivatives until present day. Furthermore, students will examine the subject matter from musicological, sociological, and historical perspectives.
