Online Learning & eCampus

Online learning at UNG is offered through UNG Online (programs and courses taught by UNG professors for UNG students) and eCampus (eCore and eMajor courses). Course work is conducted through utilization of a learning management system (BrightSpace by D2L), which offers online discussion groups, quizzes, assignment submissions, and course email.

Students are most likely to succeed in online courses when they:

  • have reliable access to an Internet-connected computer.
  • know how to navigate web sites, manage email, work with files, and do other basic computer tasks.
  • can organize their own time to complete assignments and meet deadlines.
  • participate actively in online discussions.
  • are comfortable asking for help or clarification when needed.
  • are prepared to work as hard online as they would in a face-to-face class.

About UNG Online

UNG Online offers a number of fully online certificates and associate and bachelor’s degrees. UNG Online courses are also available to students on any campus and range from core IMPACTS courses to major-specific courses.

All UNG Online courses are QM certified to ensure high-quality design, ease of use and reliability. UNG Online courses are designed, developed, taught, and supported by UNG faculty and staff.

UNG Online courses are taught entirely online, except for at least one proctored activity in each course. There are two online course formats: asynchronous and synchronous fully online. Asynchronous online courses have no specific meeting days and times. Students can log in at any time of day however there are specific deadlines for assignments. Synchronous fully online courses have virtual meetings on specific meeting days and times.

UNG Online follows the UNG academic calendar. Students must also complete mandatory attendance activities in each online course to demonstrate participation in order to be reported as attending. In addition, there are fees associated with taking online courses. Students enrolling in only online courses are exempt from mandatory student fees, except for the online learning fee. There is also a separate fee for proctored exams. UNG Online courses are accessed through Brightspace by D2L, using UNG login credentials.

Students enrolled in UNG Online programs are not eligible to register for on-campus courses, participate in the Corps of Cadets or live in residence halls. Online students can come on-campus for the use of on-campus facilities (i.e., Rec Center, health services), student engagement activities (i.e., intramural sports, fraternity & sorority life, and Nighthawks Entertainment activities), and academic services including PROS activities, library services, UNG Testing Center, career services, and more. Online students attending on campus events, participating in on campus programs or activities, or utilizing on campus services must have a registered UNG parking permit and a fully completed Certificate of Immunization form filed with Student Health Services.

About eCampus

eCampus is a service unit of the University System of Georgia. eCampus offers eCore courses and eMajor programs through affiliate USG institutions. eCampus has their own academic calendars and academic policies and processes (i.e., Academic Honesty Policy, Grade Appeals process). UNG’s eCore and eMajor Liaisons are available to help students throughout their course and through eCampus policies and processes.

About eCore

eCore, the University System of Georgia’s electronic Core IMPACTS, is a convenient and adaptable option for students to take coursework. The Core IMPACTS consist of undergraduate, general education courses primarily required during a student’s first two years of post-secondary study. Composed of basic courses in the humanities, physical and social sciences, mathematics, and languages, eCore is fundamental for any four-year degree. These courses are equivalent and accepted by all USG institutions to satisfy core requirements or prerequisites required for a particular major in a specific program.

Students take core courses in a fully asynchronous online format that combines rigor with convenient access on the Brightspace by D2L platform to include rich interaction with the instructor and fellow students. All eCore courses follow a consistent design to ensure ease of use and reliability. eCore courses are designed, developed, taught and supported by faculty and staff from multiple institutions in the state, including the University of North Georgia.

The eCore courses are taught entirely online, except for at least one proctored exam in each course, and are a great supplement to face-to-face coursework to keep students on-track for a timely graduation. Student support services, including enrollment advisement, bookstore, library services, tutoring, test proctoring and accessibility services are coordinated through the eCore Administration and the University of North Georgia.

Students should be aware of several major differences between eCore coursework and core courses offered on campus. Before registering for any eCore course, students must complete the eCore Introduction Quiz as a prerequisite. Since eCore is a collaborative program with multiple institutions, it follows a separate academic calendar that may or may not coincide with the University of North Georgia’s calendar. There are also fees associated with taking online courses. Students enrolled only in online courses are exempt from mandatory student fees, except for the online learning fee; however, there may also be a separate fee for proctored exams. While eCore courses are accessed through Brightspace by D2L, students will use different login credentials and a separate access page from their UNG courses. eCore courses also have attendance requirements that students must complete to demonstrate participation and be reported as attending.

Complaints

The University of North Georgia desires to resolve student grievances, complaints and concerns in an expeditious, fair and amicable manner. Complaints regarding any aspect of UNG operations should be filed internally to UNG authorities first and then, if necessary, to external authorities.

Go to the UNG Dean of Students: Student Complaint page for details about internal complaints.

Non-Georgia Resident, Online-Only Complaint Resolution Process

UNG follows the State Authorizations Reciprocity Agreements (SARA) complaints process. If the UNG complaint resolution is not satisfactory, an out-of-state student from another SARA state could then file a complaint with GA-SARA. The complaint would then be investigated and resolved by GA-SARA.

Go to the UNG Online Consumer Information: Consumer Complaints page for details.

Go to the UNG State Authorizations page for information about SARA and GA-SARA.
