HIST 2117 - An Introduction to the Civil War Era, 1820-1877 An introduction to the Civil War era (1820-1877) with emphasis on social, political, and economic elements. In broad terms the course covers the economic development of the non-slaveholding states in terms of an increase in manufacturing and industry following the War of 1812, the development of the agricultural economy in the South during the antebellum period, slavery in the antebellum South, western expansion of the United States, sectional politics, the secession of the southern states and the formation of the Confederacy, military objectives of the United States and the Confederacy the northern and southern home fronts and the end of the war through the Reconstruction period.
