PHIL 2010H - Honors Great Questions in Philosophy The honors class for Great Questions in Philosophy offers a more comprehensive, enriched introduction to the major themes and issues that have confronted philosophical thinkers throughout world history. We will look at both Western and Eastern traditions in philosophy and study how these traditions approach topics such as the nature of free will and determinism; God and religious belief; morality, responsibility and human happiness; human personality and the nature of persons; political theories, and human knowledge and science. It is not the purpose of this course to provide definitive answers to the questions discussed, but rather to expose one to the various proposed solutions, to discuss the cogency of various proposals, and to allow one to decide, in the light of the evidence to discuss the cogency of various proposals, and to allow one to decide in the light of the evidence offered, which proposal or proposals seem most rationally persuasive. Honors courses are taught in a seminar-style that allows students to engage in vibrant discussions of intellectual and cultural import, to share their analytical points of view, and to hone their critical thinking skills. This course will prepare the student for study in more advanced areas of philosophy, religion political science and the law. The honors classroom allows for greater development of scholarly potential through the rich exchange of ideas and specialized assignments.
