ENGL 3370 - Chinese Literature in Translation

Chinese literature extends back thousands of years. This course, instead of a survey of Chinese literature, is designed to study a selection of Chinese literary masterpieces (prose, poetry, and drama) from different periods. Students will read these works in relation to their historical and social contexts, explore their meanings and ideas, analyze their artistic techniques, and discuss how they reflect a particular time and place and what they mean to us today. Topics may include family and tradition, individual and society, past and present, man and nature, the change of cultural and social values, and women’s role in society. This course emphasizes interactive learning. The instructor will encourage students to raise questions, broaden their perspectives, and become self-aware through their reading activities. Prerequisites: ENGL 2050, ENGL 2230 and one ENGL 2100-level literature course, all with a grade of B or higher.
