ASTR 4020 - Astrophysics of Galaxies Students will explore modern topics in galactic and extragalactic astrophysics using a combination of theoretical and empirical approaches. The course will introduce the structure and dynamics of the Milky Way, spiral and elliptical galaxies, galaxy groups and clusters, active galaxies, and the large-scale structure of the universe. Students will develop physical models to describe the appearance and behavior of galaxies throughout cosmic time, while continually evaluating physical models against modern observational results.
