GEOL 1101K - Survey of Environmental Geohazards

This course examines the Earth properties and processes responsible for producing natural disasters.

Topics covered in the course provide an overview of hazards relating to natural phenomena (i.e., plate tectonics, minerals, rocks, weathering and erosion, groundwater, surficial water, etc.) as well as anthropogenic effects (i.e., energy consumption, climate change, land use, etc.). These concepts will prepare the student for an understanding of where and why disaster events occur most frequently. Historically important national and international events will be studied. The course will present and describe the mechanisms responsible for creating natural disasters and the how socioeconomic conditions make certain groups vulnerable to disasters. The values associated with how these vulnerable groups are treated and exposed to risk will also be explored.
