POLS 3250 - Indo-Pacific Affairs

The Indo-Pacific is currently the most dynamic region on the planet. As World War Two ended, only a handful of regional states existed, most of the area being the colony of one power or another. In the seventy-five years since, the people of the region not only gained their independence, but moved from agrarian to industrial societies. These states have raised the standard of living and entered the world stage as important players in the international economy and world politics. Today in the United States, hardly a day goes by when some product you use or food you consume was not partially sourced from this region. Consequently, the region is increasingly relevant to the daily life of each individual. Moreover, decisions being made by key players across this region are reshaping the geopolitical context and transforming the international order. This course seeks to provide a broad introduction to the region, as well as the economic, political, and historical forces that are shaping it and the world.
