SOCI 4060 - Sociology of Tourism

This course examines tourism through a sociological lens. Tourism is a major cultural and economic force that shapes the world and the way people experience place and culture. Major questions include: What is tourism? How is meaning ascribed to place? How are tourist attractions created, sold, and consumed? What narratives about place, history, and community are constructed and how do these stories shape our understandings of the places that we visit and the people who inhabit (or inhabited) them? What role has tourism played in economic development? How has mass tourism changed? How does tourism intersect with categorical identities such as race, class, and gender?
