The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and offers a major and minor in Chemistry. An Associate’s degree with a major in chemistry or geology is an option for those students pursuing a 2-year degree. The B.S. degree is offered on the Dahlonega campus, but students may begin their studies on the Oconee or Gainesville campuses and complete the degree in Dahlonega. Students wanting to obtain secondary education teacher certification in chemistry may complete the B.S. degree in Chemistry and then get certified through the post-baccalaureate or Master of Arts in Teaching programs in the College of Education. North Georgia chemistry 4-year graduates earn an ACS certified degree in chemistry that is recognized around the world as a “rigorous chemistry education that gives students the intellectual, experimental, and communication skills to be effective scientific professionals.” The major in chemistry is ideal for those that want to pursue a graduate degree in chemistry, education or other related field, or those that want to apply to professional schools such as pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, optometry, and others, or those that want to enter industry or government with a Bachelor’s degree. Chemistry majors take the required general chemistry and fundamental courses in inorganic, organic, physical, analytical and biochemistry and then enroll in upper-level, advanced and research courses to design a Bachelor’s degree to fit their goals.

In addition, the department offers a Dual Degree program for students pursuing an engineering degree. The Dual Degree program allows students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree from North Georgia and a Bachelor of Science in an engineering field from an area engineering school.

The department has full-time faculty located in Dahlonega, Gainesville and Oconee and is well equipped in chemical instrumentation.
