The Department of Physics offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) and to the Associate of Science degree (A.S.).
The B.S. degree in Physics prepares students for graduate studies in physics and related fields, employment in various technical positions and secondary physics education. The B.S. degree is offered on the Dahlonega campus, but students may begin their studies on another UNG campus and complete the degree in Dahlonega. Students wanting to obtain secondary education teacher certification in physics usually complete the B.S. degree in Physics and then get certified through the post-baccalaureate or Master of Arts in Teaching programs in the College of Education.
The Department of Physics offers a dual degree program which allows students to receive both a bachelor’s degree in physics from UNG and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology or Clemson University. Students begin their studies at UNG and after completing a specified 90-credit-hour curriculum, transfer to the engineering college where they complete a degree in engineering. When the engineering degree is completed, the students receive a second bachelor’s degree from UNG.
Students seeking a bachelor of engineering degree also may begin their college studies at UNG through the Regents Engineering Transfer Program (RETP) or may take a pre-engineering curriculum. Upon successful completion of the pre-engineering curriculum, RETP students transfer to the Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia Southern University, or Kennesaw State University to complete the engineering degree requirements. Non-RETP pre-engineering students take the pre-engineering curriculum and then apply for transfer to the engineering school of their choice. The department offers A.S. degree options on the Gainesville campus, including a degree in Core Curriculum with pathway courses related to Physics, Engineering, or Engineering Technology.
The department also provides students with the opportunity to minor in physics.
