The University of North Georgia Department of Music offers the following degree programs:

  • Associate of Arts in Music
  • Bachelor of Arts in Music
  • Bachelor of Science in Music Education

The Department of Music also offers a minor in Music.

The department provides a variety of core curriculum courses available in Area C and electives to the student body at large. Any open-option student who is considering a major in music or music education should consult an academic advisor in the Department of Music as soon as possible in order to make informed decisions when planning a course of study.

Core Curriculum - Area C Requirements

Every undergraduate University of North Georgia student is required to complete a course in either performing arts, visual arts, speech or philosophy as a part of the Area C core curriculum requirements. The Department of Music offers MUSC 1100 as a means by which to fulfill this requirement.

Audition Requirements

A successful entrance audition in the appropriate applied area is required for all students who desire to pursue either an associates pathway or undergraduate degree in any music program. Students who exhibit a high level of talent and potential, but are deficient in their applied area, may be offered provisional admission to the degree program and allowed to re-audition following one semester of secondary level study. Students who do not successfully pass the audition will not be admitted into the degree program.

Principal Level Applied Music

Each student who is enrolled for applied principal music instruction must concurrently participate fully in a related University of North Georgia performance ensemble. Such participation is considered a vital part of the student’s applied music instruction regardless of whether the student chooses to enroll for ensemble credit.

Senior Recital Requirements

Each candidate for the Bachelor of Arts in Music and the Bachelor of Science in Music Education must successfully present a public senior recital in her or his principal applied medium. Detailed information regarding senior recital requirements may be found in the University of North Georgia Music Student Handbook.

Proficiency Exams

Each candidate for the Bachelor of Arts in Music and the Bachelor of Science in Music Education must successfully pass proficiency exams in conducting and piano. Detailed information regarding these requirements may be found in the University of North Georgia Music Student Handbook.

Grade Requirement

All music majors must achieve a grade of C or better in each Department of Music course (including core curriculum and transfer courses) taken to fulfill degree requirements.

Music Education Majors

Requirements for Music Education Majors - Each candidate for the Bachelor of Science in Music Education must also successfully complete field experience, service learning, and internship requirements as directed by the Department of Music and the College of Education. Music Education Majors must be current members of Collegiate National Association for Music Education.
