Library

The libraries of the University of North Georgia, in keeping with the university’s mission, foster learning and academic excellence through diverse collections, services, and teaching. This is accomplished by creating a culture of inquiry, research, and lifelong learning in the academic and regional communities. The libraries support and extend the University of North Georgia’s student-focused and global mission.

Each University of North Georgia campus is serviced by an onsite and fully-staffed library. While the individual library offerings may vary, students have access to over 340 academic databases, over 75,000 electronic journals, more than 310,000 print and electronic books titles, and a variety of technology items including iPads, laptops, and video and audio recording devices. The Library’s membership in GALILEO, the award-winning compilation of licensed, commercial databases, provides the UNG community 24x7 access to many of these online resources. The University of North Georgia libraries also participate in an innovative resource-sharing initiative, GIL-Express, which gives students the ability to place either a walk-up or remote request for any of the 13 million titles eligible for circulation at any USG library. For students in need of research assistance, librarians are available during business hours or students may schedule appointments for individual consultations. Students are encouraged to visit any campus library and ask questions, and consult the website for the UNG libraries, which is the portal to all collections and services.

The Four UNG Campus Libraries

Library Technology Center (Dahlonega Campus)

Open 92 hours and seven days per week, the 88,600 square foot library offers 880 reader seats, 200 computer seats, 24 group studies, wireless connectivity, a 24 x 7 study space, a dedicated library classroom, and four public meeting and program rooms. Staffed with seven faculty and eight FTE support staff, the library provides access to 134,724 print books and 120 print serials. The library is the largest of the four locations and serves a population of 6,500 students of whom approximately 2,000 are residential. The library’s services include (a) access and reservations, (b) special collections and archives, (c) library instruction program, (d) research assistance, (e) interlibrary loan and GIL Express document delivery services, (f) institutional repository and copyright services, and (g) partial government document repository. The library is home to the Writing Center, Instructional Technology Support Center, and the Center of Distance Education and Technology Integration (DETI). Furthermore, the Library Technology Center has available for student, faculty, and staff checkout; (a) 50 iPads, (b) 36 digital voice recorders, (c) 65 Dell computers, (d) 25Mac power books, (e) 36 flip cameras, (f) 7 data projectors, (g) 4 speakers, (h) 6 Power Point clickers, and (i) 12 oral history kits including digital recorders, microphones, and stands.

John Harrison Hosch Library (Gainesville Campus)

The Hosch Library at the Gainesville Campus is the second largest of the UNG Libraries. Open 71.5 hours and six days per week, the library houses 70,000 volumes of print books and bound periodicals in addition to special collections and archival materials. The library’s Leisure Reading section offers 64 current print periodicals as well as popular books, and its Education Resource Room proves curriculum materials, puppets, kits, and other tools that are useful for students in UNG’s teacher education courses. Eleven group study rooms are available for student use, including one smart study room with a computer and projector for presentation practice. Students may access the UNG wireless network or use one of the library’s 70 computer workstations. The first floor computer lab also offers scanners, a color printer, and a photocopier. The Hosch Library’s faculty and staff provide a wide variety of library services including circulation and reference assistance, research consultation appointments, Interlibrary Loan and GIL Express, technology checkout and support, and a library instruction program offering workshops and credit-based classes teaching research skills.

Oconee Campus Library

Open 70.5 hours and six days per week, The Oconee Library located in the Student Resource Center with access to 38 computers and wireless connectivity throughout offers traditional library services and serves as the Oconee Campus tutoring center. Knowledgeable library faculty and staff work with students and faculty one-on-one to provide research assistance at the Information Help Desk and through scheduled research advisory appointments. Librarians also offer one-hour workshops in research, critical inquiry, and the use of library resources throughout the semester. In partnership with the Academic Center for Tutoring and Testing (ACTT) professional and peer tutors provide academic support in the areas of math, writing, accounting, and chemistry. The Library collections include over 10,300 print books, periodicals, electronic books, DVDs and over 350 databases accessing digital archives and periodicals. The Libraries offer a campus exchange service facilitated through the Library Catalog, GILFind, to request materials housed at the other UNG campuses and additional resources can be accessed with the borrowing privileges provided by GIL Express, which allows for loan for UNG patrons from any school in the University System of Georgia, and our traditional Inter Library Loan (ILL) services. The Library also provides textbooks in the subjects for which tutoring is offered, as well as calculators, iPads, laptops, headphones, and digital cameras and camcorders for checkout.

Learning Commons (Cumming Campus)

The 2,100 square foot reading room serves a population of over 700 students, provides 58 reader seats, 13 computer seats, one group study room, portable white boards, and a smart board. The library faculty member on duty assists students and faculty with (a) access to electronic resources, (b) library instruction, (c) research assistance, (d) interlibrary loan and GIL Express document delivery services, (e) course reserves and reference materials, (f) current newspapers and popular magazines. Students, faculty, and staff may also checkout (a) 20 laptops (b) 7 non-graphing calculators, (c) 3 graphing calculators, (d) 3 digital cameras with mini tripods. Print options include a fax/scanner/copy machine, black & white printer, and color printer. The Learning Commons offers professional Math and Writing tutoring services in a comfortable environment that promotes both collaborative and individual learning styles. While hours may vary by semester, a math tutor and a writing tutor are generally available on a drop-in basis two days a week. The Learning Commons may be accessed whenever the Cumming Campus Academic Building is open.
