The Department of English offers programs leading to the Associate of Arts degree and the Bachelor of Arts degree. Each of these programs develops communication and critical thinking skills, which are highly valued in graduate schools, professional programs, and businesses in a variety of settings.

Students may study for the A.A. with pathways to English or English Education, or they may study for the B.A. in English with a concentration in Literature, Writing & Publication, or Teacher Certification. The Literature option provides students with the broadest possible perspective of diverse literary traditions. The Writing & Publication concentration provides students with the theory and practice of writing and publishing. The Teacher Certification option includes courses in Teacher Education and field experience, leading to certification to teach grades 6-12.

The Department offers minors in English, Studies in English Language Learning (SELL), and Linguistics.

Students may take advantage of study abroad opportunities through the Center for Global Engagement and the University System of Georgia.

The mission of the Department is enhanced by the Writing Center (Dahlonega) and the Writing Fellows Program (Gainesville).
