The University of North Georgia Department of Music offers the following degree programs:

  • Associate of Arts in Music
  • Associate of Science in Music Education
  • Bachelor of Music in Music
    • Concentration in Choral Music Education
    • Concentration in Instrumental Music Education
    • Concentration in Instrumental Performance
    • Concentration in Musical Arts
    • Concentration in Piano Performance
    • Concentration in Vocal Performance

In addition, the Department of Music also offers a minor in Music.

Any student who is considering a major in music or music education should consult an academic advisor in the Department of Music as soon as possible in order to make informed decisions when planning a course of study.

Core Curriculum - Area C Requirements

Every undergraduate University of North Georgia student is required to complete a course in either performing arts, visual arts, speech, or philosophy as a part of the Area C core curriculum requirements. Bachelor of Music students are encouraged to take MUSC 1100 to fulfill this requirement.

Audition Requirements

A successful entrance audition in the appropriate applied area is required for all students who desire to pursue either an Associate’s pathway in music or music education or a Bachelor of Music degree. Students who exhibit a high level of talent and potential, but are deficient in their applied area, may be offered provisional admission to the degree program and allowed to re-audition following one semester of secondary level study. Students who do not successfully pass the audition will not be admitted into the degree program.

Major Level Applied Music

Each student who is enrolled in major-level applied music instruction must concurrently participate fully in a related University of North Georgia performance ensemble. Such participation is considered a vital part of the student’s applied music instruction regardless of whether the student chooses to enroll for ensemble credit.

Junior Recital Requirements

All candidates for the Bachelor of Music degree must successfully present a public junior recital in their major applied medium. Detailed information regarding junior recital requirements may be found in the University of North Georgia Music Student Handbook which can be found on the Music Major Resources page of the Music Department website.

Senior Capstone

Each candidate for the Bachelor of Music degree must complete a senior capstone appropriate to their concentration.

  • Candidates in Musical Arts must successfully complete a senior project in their area of focus. The project may take various forms depending on what is appropriate to the area of focus. These might include a research paper, lecture recital, composition recital, public presentation, or other approved medium.
  • Candidates in Music Performance must successfully present a public senior recital in their major applied medium.
  • Candidates in Music Education must successfully complete a portfolio concurrently with their full-time field experience.

Proficiency Exams

Each candidate for the Bachelor of Music must successfully pass a proficiency exam in piano and conducting. Additionally, candidates in Music Education must successfully pass a proficiency exam in guitar. Detailed information regarding these requirements may be found in the University of North Georgia Music Student Handbook which can be found on the Music Major Resources page of the Music Department website.

Grade Requirement

Unless otherwise specified, all music majors and minors must achieve a grade of C or better in each Department of Music course (including core curriculum and transfer courses) taken to fulfill degree requirements. Courses offered in the Department of Music are:

  • Applied Music Courses (MUAP)
  • Music Education Courses (MUED)
  • Music Courses (MUSC)

Music Education Requirements

Each candidate for the Bachelor of Music degree with a concentration in either Choral Music Education or Instrumental Music Education must also successfully complete field experience, service learning, and internship requirements as directed by the Department of Music and the College of Education. Music Education Majors should also be current members of the Collegiate National Association for Music Education (CNAME) chapter at UNG.

Performance Ensembles

The following University of North Georgia performance ensembles regularly present concerts on and off-campus. Enrollment in these ensembles is open to all qualified students by audition regardless of major:

  • Chorale
  • Patriot Choir (Corps of Cadets Men’s Chorus)
  • Le Belle Voci (Women’s Chorus)
  • Music Theatre Workshop
  • Symphonic Band
  • Wind Ensemble
  • Golden Eagle Marching Band
  • Jazz Band
  • Pep Band
  • Sinfonietta
  • Chamber Orchestra
  • Percussion Ensemble
  • Nighthawk Drumline
  • Low Brass Collective
  • Piano Ensemble

In addition to these standard performance ensembles, the Department of Music offers a variety of instrumental and vocal chamber ensembles, as well as specialty ensembles, such as jazz combo and bluegrass, to meet the needs of the students. These ensembles offer educational and creative performance opportunities while providing a setting for the development of practical leadership experience for students who are enrolled in major-level applied music instruction.
