The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and offers three B.S. degrees (Chemistry; Chemistry with Biochemistry Concentration; and Chemistry with Chemical Physics Concentration) and a minor in Chemistry. An associate degree (Associate of Science Degree in Natural Sciences) is an option for those students pursuing a 2-year degree. The three B.S. degrees are offered on the Dahlonega and Gainesville campuses, but students may begin their studies on another campus and finish their degree in either Dahlonega or Gainesville. Students aspiring secondary education teacher certification in chemistry may complete the B.S. degree in Chemistry and then get certified through the post-baccalaureate or Master of Arts in Teaching programs in the College of Education. The major in chemistry is ideal for those that want to pursue a graduate degree in chemistry, education, or other related fields, or those that want to apply to professional schools such as pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, optometry, and others, or those that want to enter industry or government with a bachelor’s degree. Chemistry majors take the required general chemistry and fundamental courses in inorganic, organic, physical, analytical, and biochemistry and then enroll in upper-level, advanced, and research courses to design a bachelor’s degree to fit their goals.

The Department of Chemistry offers a dual degree program that allows students to receive both a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from UNG and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Kennesaw State University, Georgia Southern University, Mercer University, the University of Georgia, or Clemson University. Students begin their studies at UNG and after completing a specified 90-credit-hour curriculum, transfer to the engineering college where they complete a degree in engineering. When the engineering degree is completed, the students receive a second bachelor’s degree from UNG.

The department has full-time faculty located in Dahlonega, Gainesville, and Oconee and is well equipped in chemical instrumentation.
