The Department of Modern Languages offers major programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern Languages with concentrations in Arabic, Chinese, Chinese for Global Professionals, French, French with Business Emphasis, Russian, Spanish, and Spanish with Business Emphasis. These degrees are designed to develop proficiency in the target language while introducing the student to the culture, history, literature, and linguistics of their respective countries of study.
The B.A.s in French with Business Emphasis and Spanish with Business Emphasis builds upon the study of culture, history, literature, and linguistics by including coursework in accounting, business administration, and marketing in an international context.
The Associate of Arts degree in Core IMPACTS with Pathway Courses related to Modern Languages is essentially comprised of the Core IMPACTS requirements plus the Field of Study requirements for regular Modern Languages degrees.
The Department offers minor programs in Arabic, Chinese, Flagship Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Spanish, and coursework is also available in Portuguese.
Courses at the 1000, 2000, and sometimes the 3000-level are available in intensive formats such as Summer Language Institutes (SLIs), summer classes, and other linked two-course and four-course options during fall and spring semesters. These programs are designed to bring students to an intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency in a shorter period in order to achieve their language-related goals sooner and more efficiently. The Department of Modern Languages and the Department of Military Science offer students in the Corps of Cadets who are attached to a reserve unit the unique opportunity to combine course work at the university with study at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in Monterey, California, in order to fulfill the Bachelor’s degree requirements while training as military linguists.* These students will receive an A.A. degree upon completion of language course work at the DLI. On returning to UNG, students will maintain and enhance the language skills acquired at the DLI via distance learning and will complete a major of their choice for the B.A. degree, including any remaining Core IMPACTS requirements needed.
The Department currently sponsors its own summer study abroad programs in Yerevan, Armenia; Cusco, Peru; Cuenca and Coruña, Spain; Nagoya, Japan, and the University maintains exchange or placement agreements at Sogang University in South Koread; National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan; ROC Military Academy in Taiwan; Fu Hsing Kang College National Defense University in Taiwan; Management College National Defense University in Taiwan, with the last three being cadet exchange programs. Cadets also have the exclusive opportunity to participate in a one-semester exchange program with the Korea Military Academy. We also offer programs at Daugavpils University in Daugavpils, Latvia, both for cadets under the ProjectGo scholarship and civilian students; Caen, Normandy (France); and the Goethe Institute in Berlin, Germany; and Nanzan University, Nagoya and Seinan Gakuin University, Fukuoka, both in Japan allowing students to take courses in our major and minor programs. Other opportunities are also available or currently under development in Italy, South Korea, and Taiwan. One and/or two-semester programs for students of Spanish are also available in Granada, Spain, at the GRIIS Institute and in Cusco, Peru at the Universidad Andina del Cusco. Students may also study away in San Juan, Peurto Rico. Additionally, students may take advantage of other study abroad programs through the University System of Georgia. The Department of Modern Languages offers internship opportunities in Spanish at local and international organizations with the collaboration of the Office of Career Services and the Center for Global Engagement. These internships enhance students’ language proficiency and professional development.
A state-of-the-art language laboratory offers students and faculty the latest innovations in language pedagogy and digital technology, thereby supporting language acquisition for the entire university community.
The Department of Modern Languages faculty assist students in planning their academic program of study and in choosing courses which fulfill degree requirements for the selected major. Students are responsible for knowing their degree requirements, for meeting with their advisor on a regular basis, and for completing the baccalaureate plan of study during their junior year.**
The department also offers a certificate in Spanish Translation. This 18-hour program will provide students with a general academic background and hands-on experience in translation. It can be taken as a stand-alone program or in conjunction with any major.
* Admission to UNG and to the Corps of Cadets does not guarantee acceptance to DLI language study. The DLI controls its own admission policy and sets its own quota each admission period. Part of the admission requirements to the DLI involves making an appropriate score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB).
** No grade below “C” will be accepted in a major area course required for a B.A. degree in Modern Languages with concentrations in Arabic, Chinese, Chinese for Global Professionals, French, French with Business Emphasis, Russian, Spanish, or Spanish with Business Emphasis. Major area courses include 1000- through 4000-level courses in the specific discipline in which the student is majoring. Additionally, no grade below “C” will be accepted in a course leading to an A.A. degree or language minor.
