The Department of Sociology and Human Services (SAHS) is a multi-disciplinary department with 6 degree granting programs (sociology, human services, behavioral science pathway (SOCI & SOWK)), two minors, and one certificate program. In our majors, students develop an appreciation of themselves and the world around them, and the knowledge and skills to serve diverse populations locally and globally. Additionally, our programs are adaptable, and highlight applied and theoretical skillsets that prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce. Students develop strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills and demonstrate knowledge of scientific methodology and theory, and an understanding of interpersonal and societal dynamics. Many of today’s societal problems require systems-level solutions (solutions that are developed at an organizational, institutional or community-level rather than an individual level). SAHS students are trained to be systems-thinkers and are positioned to take leadership roles in their communities.

Our Sociology program offers a broad foundation in the field of Sociology, including a solid grounding in social theory and research methodology. Sociology majors are encouraged to complete an internship and are well prepared for entry level positions in a variety of fields or advanced study in sociology or closely related fields (law, business, social work, among others). Students may complete a BS, minor, or earn a certificate in sociological practice. Our nationally accredited Human Services is an applied degree that prepares students for entry level position in the field of human services. More specifically, our program prepares students with the knowledge and skills necessary to serve individuals, families, groups, and communities, and to manage human services functions. Field experience courses in an applied setting are required of all Human Services Delivery and Administration majors.

Each major will be assigned a faculty advisor to assist in the development of academic and career goals and strategies. For more information or to speak with an advisor, please contact the Department of Sociology and Human Services. All students will demonstrate competency and skills in their major in addition to critical thinking, oral and written proficiencies.
