Design and Technology for Theatre (B.F.A.)

The Design and Technology for Theatre degree program consists of a one hundred twenty (120) semester hour sequence designed to meet the educational employment requirements of workers in theatrical design and the entertainment technology industry.  As a natural extension of the Entertainment Technology Certificate program developed and inaugurated in 2006 and GSC’s well established Associate of Arts degree in theatre, the Design and Technology BFA degree program focuses on application as well as theory with a firm scholarly foundation and an intensive hands-on approach to learning.

Semester Core Curriculum (Areas A-E)

BFA Major Curriculum (38 hours)


THEA 1100 Theatre Appreciation should be taken in Area C of the CORE Curriculum.  If not taken in C, it must be taken as an Elective.

AREAS OF FOCUS (15 hours minimum)


Students must choose two (2) AREAS OF FOCUS from below.  Any combination of design and technology areas may be made, but students must complete all courses listed for the two areas chosen.  Credit hours over 20 will be applied to Elective Credits below.

THEA 2250 & 3250 are REQUIRED for all Lighting, Scenic, and Costume Design students.

Electives in Major


A minimum of 39 credit hours in 3000- and/or 4000-level courses required for the degree.  No repeated courses except where noted.  THEA 1100 Theatre Appreciation should be taken in Area C of the CORE Curriculum.  If not taken in C, it must be taken as an Elective.

Program Completion Requirements:


  1. Successful completion of courses required in degree program (minimum 120 semester credits, plus Physical Education requirements).
  2. Successful completion of minimum 42 general education credits according to distribution established by GSC (Areas A-E) for Associate degree program.
  3. Successful completion of at least 39 credits of coursework 3000-level and above in the major with grade of “C” or higher.
  4. A minimum of 45 semester hours must be taken in residency at GSC.
  5. Successful completion of the US and Georgia legislative requirements.
  6. Successful completion of portfolio review upon accumulation of 45 hours to continue to upper division coursework.  A signed letter of recommendation from the reviewing jury must accompany the plan of study.
  7. Successful completion of THEA 4900, Senior Thesis Project.
  8. THEA 1010 is repeatable for up to 12 hours total.  THEA 3010 is repeatable for up to 4 hours total.
  9. In addition to the above requirements, students will be required to serve in a production leadership capacity for a minimum of two shows per year.  This leadership capacity may take the form of designer, stage manager, crew leader, master carpenter or electrician, or other capacity.  Production assignments will be made by the faculty with input from the student.
  10. Meet all other GSC graduation policies.
