Design and Technology for Theatre (B.F.A.)

The Design and Technology for Theatre degree program consists of a one hundred twenty (120) semester hour sequence designed to meet the educational employment requirements of workers in theatrical design and the entertainment technology industry.  As a natural extension of the Entertainment Technology Certificate program developed and inaugurated in 2006 and UNG’s well established Associate of Arts degree in theatre, the Design and Technology BFA degree program focuses on application as well as theory with a firm scholarly foundation and an intensive hands-on approach to learning.

Core Curriculum Requirements 60 hours

Area A1: No exceptions

Area A2: No exceptions

Area B: No exceptions

Area C: THEA 1100 recommended

Area D: No exceptions

Area E: No exceptions

BFA Major Curriculum 38 hours


THEA 1100 Theatre Appreciation should be taken in Area C of the CORE Curriculum.  If not taken in C, it must be taken as an Elective.

Choose one (1) Area of Concentration below and complete all required classes listed for that area.

Electives in Major


Choose electives from the classes listed below. No repeats except as noted. Students must have 39 or more hours of upper division coursework (3000+ numbered classes) to graduate.

Program Completion Requirements


  1. Admitted to the program by letter of acceptance from Gainesville Theatre Alliance and Theatre Department at the University of North Georgia.
  2. Successful Completion of courses required in degree program (minimum 120 credit hours).
  3. Successful completion of minimum 42 general education credits (Core Requirements) according to distribution established by UNG.
  4. Successful completion of at least 39 credit hours of upper division coursework (3000 level and higher) in the major.
  5. Successful completion of ALL coursework within the Major with a grade of C or higher.
  6. Successful completion of a Senior Exit Interview (THEA 4900) with a grade of C or higher.
  7. Theatre 1010 is repeatable for up to 12 credit hours. THEA 3010 is repeatable for up to 6 credit hours (3 sections of THEA 1010 prerequisite).
  8. The productions, and all associated work, of the Gainesville Theatre Alliance are an integral part of the educational experience provided by the degree program. THEA 1010 and 3010 classwork is task-driven and time outside of class time may be necessary to accomplish assigned tasks on which the class grade is based. It is expected that all BFA for Design and Technology for Theatre students will spend additional time, outside of class time (THEA1010 & THEA 3010), in production activities.
  9. Meet all other UNG and Department of Theatre graduation requirements.
