Elementary and Special Education (B.S.)

The Elementary and Special Education program offers a dual major in early childhood and special education, preparing students to work in both fields in grades P-5. All cohorts begin in the Fall semester and program courses are offered both face-to-face and online. During the fall placement, candidates are assigned to selected area schools and expected to attend preplanning along with the classroom teachers.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for admission to the Elementary and Special Education program, a student must:
- Complete 60 semester hours of core curriculum credit (Area A – Area F) applicable to the program with an overall grade point average of 2.75 or higher.
- Area F coursework must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
- Area A coursework of the core curriculum must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
- Provide a passing score or exemption on the GACE Program Admissions Test or its equivalent (see the Teacher Education Department website for exemption information).
- Complete an application for admission to the Teacher Education Program. The application deadline is posted on the department web page.
- Provide proof of liability insurance valid through projected graduation date. This insurance can be purchased through either of the professional education organizations listed on the application form.
- Students need to complete the Area A math course as a prerequisite for MATH 2008. MATH 2008 is an Area F requirement for Elementary and Special Education majors.
- Transfer students applying from another institution for admission into this program will be required to submit a letter of recommendation from an education faculty member in the transferring institution.
