Secondary Education with a Major in Earth Science (B.S.S.E)

A grade of “C” or higher is required in all major coursework.

The Secondary Education with a Major in Earth Science program prepares students to teach Earth science in grades 6-12. All cohorts begin in the spring semester, and program courses include a range of modalities (i.e., face-to-face, online, hybrid formats). Starting in the spring of the junior year, candidates are assigned to selected area schools and expected to participate in daily activities with their mentor teachers until the time of graduation. Teacher candidates must complete placements at the level of both middle grades and high school, as certification is 6-12.

Progression to Upper Division/Major Requirements

After completion of the core, to be eligible for progression to the upper division courses in the Secondary Education program, a student must:

  1. Complete 60 - 80 semester credit hours credit applicable to the program with an overall grade point average of 2.50 or higher.
  2. Complete the 1-credit-hour UNG 1101 first-year experience course.
  3. Complete content coursework with a grade of “C” or higher.
  4. Complete Writing and Mathematics coursework of the Core IMPACTS with a grade of “C” or higher.
  5. Complete an application for progression to the upper division, which includes the required pre-service certification through the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. The application deadline is posted on the College of Education website at https://ung.edu/college-of-education/admissions.php.
  6. Provide proof of liability insurance valid through projected graduation date. This insurance can be purchased through any of the professional education organizations listed on the application form.
