ENGL 4165 - Rhetoric, Logic, and Law

This course builds upon prior writing skill development and knowledge of rhetorical concepts and theories to prepare students for various academic and professional writing situations including legal writing. Additionally, this course introduces students to the principles of rhetorical logic developed by Aristotle and successive scholars in the liberal arts. In contrast to a philosophical approach to logic, often called formal or symbolic logic, this course will approach logic, in the words of R.E. Houser, “in its natural setting,” that is, as a discipline intimately connected to the discipline of rhetoric. This foundation will prepare students for the more formal analysis and persuasive techniques associated with legal writing but will serve students preparing for work in a broad range of careers and academic disciplines.
