The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and offers three B.S. degrees (Chemistry; Chemistry with Biochemistry Concentration; and Chemistry with Chemical Physics Concentration) and a minor in Chemistry. An Associate’s degree (Associate Degree in Core Curriculum with Pathway Courses in Chemistry) is an option for those students pursuing a 2-year degree. The three B.S. degrees are offered on the Dahlonega campus, but students may begin their studies on the Oconee or Gainesville campuses and complete the degree in Dahlonega. Students aspiring secondary education teacher certification in chemistry may complete the B.S. degree in Chemistry and then get certified through the post-baccalaureate or Master of Arts in Teaching programs in the College of Education. University of North Georgia chemistry 4-year graduates earn one of three ACS certified degrees in chemistry that are recognized around the world as a “rigorous chemistry education that gives students the intellectual, experimental, and communication skills to be effective scientific professionals.” The major in chemistry is ideal for those that want to pursue a graduate degree in chemistry, education or other related field, or those that want to apply to professional schools such as pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, optometry, and others, or those that want to enter industry or government with a Bachelor’s degree. Chemistry majors take the required general chemistry and fundamental courses in inorganic, organic, physical, analytical and biochemistry and then enroll in upper-level, advanced and research courses to design a Bachelor’s degree to fit their goals.
The Department of Chemistry offers a dual degree program that allows students to receive both a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from UNG and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Kennesaw State University, Georgia Southern University, Mercer University, the University of Georgia, or Clemson University. Students begin their studies at UNG and after completing a specified 90-credit-hour curriculum, transfer to the engineering college where they complete a degree in engineering. When the engineering degree is completed, the students receive a second bachelor’s degree from UNG.
The department has full-time faculty located in Dahlonega, Gainesville and Oconee and is well equipped in chemical instrumentation.
