The Department of Sociology and Human Services (SAHS) is a multi-disciplinary department with programs at the Associate and Baccalaureate level. The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree with a pathway in Behavioral Sciences and courses related to Sociology, and the A.S. with a pathway in Behavioral Sciences and courses related to Social Work, are options for students pursuing a 2-year degree. At the baccalaureate level, the SAHS Department offers the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Sociology and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Human Services Delivery & Administration (HSDA). Students may choose a concentration in Substance Addiction Studies to narrow their focus within the B.S. HSDA. The Department also offers a Sociological Practice Certificate as well as minors in Human Services, Program Planning & Evaluation, and Sociology.
In the various SAHS majors, students develop an appreciation of themselves and the world around them, and the knowledge and skills to serve diverse populations locally and globally. Additionally, our programs are adaptable, and highlight applied and theoretical skillsets that prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce. Students develop strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills and demonstrate knowledge of scientific methodology and theory, and an understanding of interpersonal and societal dynamics. Many of today’s societal problems require systems-level solutions (solutions that are developed at an organizational, institutional or community-level rather than an individual level). SAHS students are trained to be systems-thinkers and are positioned to take leadership roles in their communities.
Our Sociology programs offer a broad foundation in the field of Sociology, including a solid grounding in social theory and research methodology. B.S. Sociology majors are required to complete a minor, and are encouraged to complete an internship. Students are well prepared for entry level positions in a variety of fields or advanced study in sociology or closely related fields (law, business, social work, among others). Our nationally accredited HSDA program is an applied degree that prepares students for entry level position in the field of human services. More specifically, our program prepares students with the knowledge and skills necessary to serve individuals, families, groups, and communities, and to manage human services functions. Field experience courses in an applied setting are required of all B.S. HSDA majors.
Each major will be assigned a faculty advisor to assist in the development of academic and career goals and strategies. All students will demonstrate competency and skills in their major in addition to critical thinking and oral and written proficiencies.
