The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and offers an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree with a pathway in Natural Sciences and courses related to Chemistry, a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Chemistry, and a minor in Chemistry. Students may choose a concentration within the baccalaureate degree to narrow their focus. The B.S. degree is offered on the Dahlonega and Gainesville campuses, but students may begin their studies on another campus and finish their degree in either Dahlonega or Gainesville. The major in chemistry is ideal for those that want to pursue a graduate degree in chemistry, education, or other related fields, or those that want to apply to professional schools such as pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, optometry, and others, or those that want to enter industry or government with a bachelor’s degree. Chemistry majors take the required general chemistry and fundamental courses in inorganic, organic, physical, analytical, and biochemistry and then enroll in upper-level, advanced, and research courses to design a bachelor’s degree to fit their goals. Students interested in pursuing secondary education teacher certification in chemistry at the bachelor’s level should review the Chemistry Education (BSED) offered through the College of Education.
The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry also offers a dual degree program that allows students to receive both a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from UNG and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology, Kennesaw State University, Georgia Southern University, Mercer University, or Clemson University. Students begin their studies at UNG and after completing the specified UNG curriculum, transfer to the engineering college where they complete a degree in engineering. When the engineering degree is completed, the student can request their bachelor’s degree in chemistry from UNG be awarded.
