120 hours
The Exercise Science concentration prepares students for graduate studies in various allied health fields, including, but not limited to Athletic Training (AT), Exercise Science (ES), Occupational Therapy (OT), Physical Therapy (PT), Physician Assistant (PA), and other clinical professions. In addition to the academic curriculum, students take part in an immersive semester-long internship in their chosen allied health setting. Upon graduation, students will be well prepared to enter graduate studies in the allied health setting and will have a competitive edge over students who did not complete an undergraduate program with a concentration in Exercise Science.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for admission to the Exercise Science concentration area within the Department of Kinesiology, a student must be accepted as a student by the University of North Georgia and meet the following minimum requirements:
- Complete 35 semester hours of earned credit and have an overall grade point average of 2.75 or higher at the time of application;
- Complete all courses in Core IMPACTS Writing and Mathematics, BIOL 2251K, BIOL 2252K, and KINS 2100 with grades of “C” or higher. All prerequisite courses must be successfully completed no later than the end of the spring semester (the semester of application submission);
- Complete an application for admission to the Exercise Science concentration area including an up-to-date copy of your transcript (unofficial), a letter of intent, and a personal resume. Applications will be received in January of each year for fall semester admittance (application deadline information is posted on the Department of Kinesiology - Exercise Science web site).
- Interviews may be conducted by the Exercise Science Admission Committee.
All students entering into the Exercise Science concentration area must be accepted before beginning any professionally-based coursework. A completed application must be submitted during the sophomore year and approved prior to admission to the Exercise Science concentration area. Also, a copy of your current college transcript, your resume, and a letter of intent must be included with the application. An unofficial or “student” transcript copy is sufficient. Furthermore, admission is required prior to enrollment in the following upper division classes: KINS 3101, KINS 3200, KINS 3350, KINS 3380, KINS 3380L, KINS 4420, KINS 4380, KINS 4435, KINS 4471, KINS 4480, and KINS 4490.
Once a year in January, applications will be accepted for fall semester admittance. Please see the admissions page for details regarding deadlines for application: https://ung.edu/teacher-education/admissions.php. If the Exercise Science admissions committee has additional questions concerning an application, an interview may be scheduled. The Admissions Committee will select qualified students for admittance into the program. All applicants will receive a letter indicating their status, whether accepted, provisionally accepted, or denied. Qualified students not selected for admittance will be ranked and placed on a waiting list. Provisionally accepted students that fail to meet the qualifications will have their acceptance letter withdrawn and the first qualified applicant on the waiting list will be considered for admittance.
Retention in Exercise Science Concentration Area
One important aspect of the Exercise Science concentration area is the constant vigilance exercised by the faculty involved to ensure that standards of quality are maintained. The following standards must be maintained for continued retention in the concentration area:
- Compliance with rules and regulations prescribed for all students at the University of North Georgia;
- Completion of all courses in the academic major with an academic grade of “C” or higher; and
- Maintenance of an overall grade point average of 2.75 as required for concentration area admission as well as for graduation.
Probation and Dismissal
Students may be placed on probation and/or dismissal if they fail to comply with the standards for retention in the Exercise Science concentration area. Two consecutive semesters or sessions on probation will result in dismissal from the Exercise Science concentration area. In addition, a student will not be allowed to register for KINS 4490 (Internship: Exercise Science) until the standards for retention in the Exercise Science concentration area are met. Due to the sensitive nature of working with both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals in various clinical settings, this policy will be strictly enforced.
Appeals
Students denied admission to or continuance in the Exercise Science concentration area may appeal the decision. Appeals must be made in writing to the Dean of the College of Education and should clearly state why an exception should be made. A student must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.75 to be considered for admission. The College of Education’s Student Admissions and Recognition Committee will review the student’s appeal. An adverse decision by the Dean may be appealed in writing to the Associate Provost for Academic Administration, whose decision shall be final.
