The Elementary and Special Education program offers a program leading to certification major in early childhood and special education, preparing students to work in both fields in grades P-5. All cohorts begin in the Fall semester and program courses are offered both face-to-face and online. During the fall placement, candidates are assigned to selected area schools and expected to participate in daily activities with their mentor teachers.
Progression to Upper Division/Major Requirements
After completition of the core, to be eligible for progression to the upper division courses in the Elementary and Special Education program, a student must:
- Complete 60 semester hours of Core IMPACTS and Field of Study credit applicable to the program with an overall grade point average of 2.50 or higher.
- Field of Study coursework must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
- Writing and Mathematics coursework of the Core IMPACTS must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
- Complete an application for progression to the upper division, which includes the required pre-service certification through the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. The application deadline is posted on the College of Education website at https://ung.edu/college-of-education/admissions.php
- Provide proof of liability insurance valid through projected graduation date. This insurance can be purchased through any of the professional education organizations listed on the application form.
