Middle Grades Education (B.S.)

The middle-level program prepares students to work in grades 4-8. Middle-level candidates select two teaching field concentrations (Math, Science, Social Studies, or English/Language Arts). All middle-level cohorts begin in the fall semester. During the fall placement of the senior year, candidates are assigned to selected area schools and expected to attend preplanning along with the classroom teachers.

Progression to Upper Division/Major Requirements

To be eligible for progression to the upper division of the Middle Grades Education Program (courses beyond the core), a student must:

  1. Complete 60 semester hours of credit applicable to the degree program with an overall grade point average of 2.50 or higher.
  2. Completed EDUC 2110, EDUC 2120, EDUC 2130, and Field of Study courses with a grade of C or higher, and successfully complete the field experience hours, and display the professional dispositions required to work with students.
  3. Complete Core Impacts Writing and Mathematics courses with a grade of C or higher.
  4. Complete Core IMPACTS STEM Math requirement with a grade of C or higher.
  5. Complete an application for progression to the College of Education Program, which includes an application for a pre-service certification to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission required for all field and clinical placements. Deadlines are posted on the department web page.
  6. Provide proof of professional liability insurance that is valid through the projected graduation date. This insurance can be purchased through any of the professional educational organizations listed on the application form.
  7. Students should meet with their education advisor regularly and visit the College of Education Program website to prepare for the process of progressing to the upper division courses: https://ung.edu/college-of-education/admissions.php.
