English Education (BSED)

Students who successfully complete the BSED in English Education at UNG will be certified to teach grades 6-12 in English content. Prior to recommendation for certification, students must take and pass the GACE in their content area.
Completion of an application through the College of Education to progress to upper division courses is required. Please see https://ung.edu/college-of-education/admissions.php for more information regarding deadlines and requirements.
A minimum grade of “C” is required for all Field of Study, Content, and Teacher Preparation courses in this degree program, unless otherwise noted.
To be eligible for progression to the upper division courses, a student must:
- Complete 60 to 80 semester hours of Core IMPACTS and Field of Study credit applicable to the program with an overall grade point average of 2.50 or higher;
- Complete EDUC 2110, EDUC 2120, EDUC 2130, and Field of Study courses with a grade of “C” or higher;
- Complete Core IMPACTS Writing, Mathematics, and STEM Math/Tech courses with a grade of “C” or higher;
- All secondary content coursework requires grades of “C” or higher;
- Complete an application for progression to the upper division, which includes the required pre-service certification through the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. The application deadline is posted on the College of Education website at https://ung.edu/college-of-education/admissions.php;
- Provide proof of liability insurance valid through projected graduation date. This insurance can be purchased through any of the professional education organizations listed on the application form;
- Provide a copy of signed plan of study

Core IMPACTS - 42 hours

Note: Students are strongly encouraged to complete ENGL 2050 and ENGL 2230 courses within the first 60 hours of their degree progression to prepare for the 3000- and 4000-level required courses for which they are prerequisites. Major Requirements - 60 hours
Note: Students can take as many as two 3000- or 4000-level ENGL courses towards their major (6 total credit hours) before completing ENGL 2230 with a grade of “C” or higher, unless given instructor permission. Content Courses - 30 hours
- Two 2100-level literature surveys not taken in Core IMPACTS Institution, Core IMPACTS Humanities, or Field of Study
- One course selected from ENGL 34xx or 44xx
- One course selected from ENGL 36xx or 46xx
- ENGL 3000- or 4000-level literature
Teacher Preparation Courses - 30 hours
