Optional: Embedded Certificate in Language Studies - 21 hours
The embedded Certificate in Language Studies is designed to provide students with credentials that document their linguistic and intercultural competence in a language area of focus. Students will be exposed to general linguistic concepts, as well as an array of language and culture courses in their focus area: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish. To receive a certificate in one of these languages, students must complete 21 semester hours of courses in the same language at the 3000 level or above. All courses counting toward the certificate must be taken on a letter grade basis, and a grade of C or higher must be earned in each course. Students in their last semester before graduation will be responsible for registering for the Oral Proficiency Exam (ACTFL Computerized OPI) and should submit the Certificate Request form to have their certificate prepared for them. The department head or a faculty representative of the language area of focus will also alert the Registrar’s Office that all requirements have been met. This certificate will be embedded into the Modern Language program.
Any student who has completed all UNG general institutional admissions requirements for a bachelor’s degree may take courses in their focus language. The courses in the certificate require prerequisite language courses (see below) before enrolling in upper-level coursework. This certificate is open to any Modern Language major.
Prerequisites
- Area of Focus: French or Spanish
- Complete the 2002 level in the language area of focus or the equivalent with a grade of C or higher (note: this can also be satisfied by CLEP examination)
- Area of Focus: Arabic, Chinese, or Russian
- Complete the 2003 level in the language area of focus or the equivalent with a grade of C or higher (note: this can also be satisfied by FLATS examination)
Courses
- 21 hours at the 3000-4000 level in the language area of focus with a grade of C or higher
Note: the language area of focus may be the same as the major language, but courses are not eligible to meet both requirements. Courses taken to fulfill the area of focus that do not fit into the minor or open elective area will be additional beyond the requirements of the bachelor’s degree.
Completion Requirements
Take the ACTFL Computerized Oral Proficiency Exam in the last semester before graduation and score at a minimum Intermediate Mid. The certificate will not be awarded if the candidate does not take the OPI. The student should show their official score to the department head or the faculty representative for review.
