The Visual Arts Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) is a professional degree that equips students with proficiency in an area of focus, preparing them for graduate school admission or for positions within a variety of creative industries that demand advanced artistic expertise. Students culminate their degree with a B.F.A Senior Capstone Exhibition, which provides an applied learning experience.

The areas of focus in the BFA in Visual Arts are: Ceramics & Sculpture; Drawing & Painting; Graphic Design; Photography; Illustration; 3D Modeling for Game and Film; and Printmaking and Paper Arts.

The Visual Arts B.F.A. program is by internal admission through the Department of Visual Arts. Applications to the B.F.A. will be reviewed every fall and spring semester.

Criteria for Admission

  1. Pass Foundations Portfolio Review & Completed Field of Study
  2. 2000 level studio course in area of focus (can be a Field of Study elective)
  3. Good academic standing
  4. Submission of complete B.F.A. Application (form, portfolio, and Statement of Progress - see Visual Arts website for detailed instructions)

Visual arts majors must achieve a grade of C or better in each Department of Visual Arts course taken to fulfill degree requirements.

  • Foundations Portfolio Review

*Foundations portfolio submitted for review after or concurrently with ART 1010, ART 1020, and ART 1030. Completion between 30-45 hours.

Major Requirements - 60 hours


Visual arts majors must achieve a grade of C or better in each Department of Visual Arts course taken to fulfill degree requirements.

Senior Studio Art - 12 hours


Select 4 4XXX-level Studio Art courses with a minimum of 2 in the area of focus (students can have 2 areas of focus):

Art Studio or Art History Electives - 6 hours


  • 2 courses in 3XXX/4XXX Art Studio or Art History

Graduation Requirements


First-Year Experience Course - 1 hour
