HIST 3102 - The Civil Rights Era, 1877-1970 An introduction to the Civil Rights Era, 1877-1970 with emphasis on social, political, and economic elements. In broad terms the course will cover the background of the Civil Rights beginning in the aftermath of the Civil War, the socio-political racial turbulence of the reconstruction Era, the “Redemption” of the South and subsequent entrenchment of white supremacy in the region, the advent of Jim Crow laws and disenfranchisement, Civil Rights agitation of the Progressive Era, the rise of the modern Civil Rights movement after World War II, the pivotal events of the 1950s and 1960s related to the movement, and changing federal and state government policy. The class will approach these topics by looking at public and private institutions of the period as well as the personalities involved.
Prerequisite/Corequisite: Prerequistes: HIST 2111 or HIST 2112 or HSDA 3100 for HSDA majors
