The Department of English offers programs leading to the Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree with a pathway in English, and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in English. Students will choose a concentration within the B.A. English degree to narrow their focus. Each of these programs develops communication and critical thinking skills, which are highly valued in graduate schools, professional programs, and businesses in a variety of settings.

B.A. English Concentrations

The Literature concentration provides students with the broadest possible perspective of diverse literary traditions.

The Writing & Publication concentration provides students with the theory and practice of writing and publishing.

The Literature, Law, and Argumentation concentration explicitly connects the skills gained through the study of literature and rhetoric – intensive reading, analysis, research, and effective writing – to legal subjects and prepares students to apply for law school.

Students interested in pursuing secondary education teacher certification in English at the bachelor’s level should review the English Education (BSED)  offered through the College of Education.

The Department offers minors in English, Linguistics, and Creative Writing.

Students may take advantage of study abroad opportunities through the Center for Global Engagement and the University System of Georgia.

The mission of the Department is enhanced by the Writing Center (Dahlonega) and the Writing Fellows Program (Gainesville).

The faculty of the Department of English assist students in planning their academic program of study and in choosing courses that comply with degree requirements for the selected major.

Graduation Requirements

A graduation requirement in each B.A. English degree program is a senior assessment, which will be administered during the last academic year before graduation. In addition, all B.A. English degrees require students to complete a Modern Language through the 2002-level.

No grade below “C” will be accepted in a major area course required for a degree in English. Major area courses include 1000- through 4000-level courses in the specific discipline in which the student is majoring.

Student Organizations

The English Department is the home of The Chestatee Review, a student publication. The Department also includes Dahlonega and Gainesville chapters of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society.
