Elementary and Special Education (B.S.)

The Elementary and Special Education program offers a dual major in early childhood and special education, preparing students to work in both fields in grades P-5. All cohorts begin in the Fall or Summer semester. During the fall placement, candidates are assigned to selected area schools and expected to attend preplanning along with the classroom teachers during both years of the program.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for admission to the Elementary and Special Education program, a student must:
- Complete 60 semester hours of core curriculum credit (Area A – Area F) applicable to the program with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
- Area F coursework must carry a grade of “C” or higher.
- Area A coursework of the core curriculum must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher.
- Provide a passing score or exemption on the GACE Program Admissions Test or its equivalent (see the Teacher Education Department web site for exemption information).
- Complete an application for admission to the Teacher Education Program. Application deadline is posted on the department web page.
- Provide proof of liability insurance valid through projected graduation date. This insurance can be purchased through either of the professional education organizations listed on the application form.
- Select a Math in Area D. MATH 2400 is strongly recommended. Any course chosen must receive a grade of “C” or higher. Students need two math courses as a prerequisite for MATH 2008, which is an Area F requirement for Elementary and Special Education majors.
- Receive a satisfactory evaluation of candidate disposition provided by Area F instructors.
- Transfer students applying from another institution for admission into this program will be required to submit a letter of recommendation from an education faculty member in the transferring institution.
