HIST 4670 - Studies in Central Eurasian History The Great Game was a cold war between the British and Russian Empires in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The British were certain that the Russians planned to take over their crown jewel, India while Russia was positive that the British planned to expand into the Central Asia, on which the Russians also had designs. In between the two empires was Afghanistan-the borders of the country would be determined by the Great Game. The Great Game took a break in the mid-twentieth century but has resumed with the collapse of the Soviet Union. With American involvement in Central Asia, particularly since 9/11, there is a new Great Game with more players. Regardless of the players, the Great Game and the machinations of all involved have impacted history and culture and a number of ways which will be explored in this class. (ASIAN, EUROPEAN OR WORLD)
