SOCI 4080 - Punishment and Mass Incarceration


This course familiarizes students with the genealogy of punishment in the US context and the causes and consequences of mass incarceration. The course focuses on the social-structural drivers of punishment and the impact that mass incarceration has on individuals, communities, and institutions. Students learn how intersecting inequalities and systems of power are embodied in approaches to punishment and criminal justice-related social reforms are examined.
